The Toussaint Family

June 11 - July 11, 2021
Share

Three beautiful miniature portraits from the 1820s feature the fashionable hairdresser Pierre Toussaint (ca. 1781–1853), Mrs. Juliette Toussaint (ca. 1786–1851), and their adopted daughter Euphémie (1815–1829). Having transcended their beginnings under French slavery in Saint-Domingue (Haiti), this remarkable family became well known and respected in 19th-century New York City. Pierre Toussaint was declared Venerable by the Catholic Church in 1996.

Exhibitions at New-York Historical are made possible by Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, the Saunders Trust for American History, the Evelyn & Seymour Neuman Fund, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
