Upcoming Library Closings

The Patricia D. Klingenstein Library reading room occasionally closes or closes early for a special event. Please be sure to periodically check this page for changes and additions. You may also email at reference@nyhistory.org or call ahead at (212) 485-9225 for the latest information before making a trip into New York City to use the Klingenstein Library.

No new researchers will be admitted to the reading room after the indicated times on the following dates. Retrieval of collections ends one half hour prior.​​​​​​

Printed Collections and Manuscript Collections
You do not need an appointment to consult the Printed Collections or the Manuscript Collections.

Small portions of the Library’s Printed Collections and Manuscript Collections are now stored offsite. Any item with the designation of “Offsite” on a catalog record may be requested for onsite use in the Library’s reading room. Please keep in mind that it will take between two (2) and five (5) business days for collections to arrive, and you should plan your research accordingly. A list of call number ranges being stored offsite can be found here.

Graphic Collections
Researchers need an appointment to view materials from the Department of Prints, Photographs and Architectural Collections. To make an appointment, e-mail printroom@nyhistory.org.

Please note appointments for Graphic Collections are only available Tuesday-Friday, year-round.

Digital Collections
Digital Collections are always available for research remotely at digitalcollections.nyhistory.org.


All Klingenstein Library patrons must register before conducting research and will be asked to provide current government-issued photo identification. All researchers must register and create an account using our online collections request system.  For a detailed guide to the registration and request process, please click here.

WiFi is available in the library's reading room. Digital cameras may be used in compliance with the library policy (see "Reproductions and Photocopying" below). We ask that students at the high school level or younger visit the Klingenstein Library with an adult, such as a parent or a teacher.

To protect the safety and security if our collections, surveillance cameras are operating in the reading room at all times.

Compliance with the following security guidelines is a requirement for admittance and use of the Library’s reading room and collections

Only the following items may be carried into the library reading room:

  • Laptops and tablets (without cases)
  • Digital cameras
  • Cell phones and personal audio devices
  • Up to five (5) pages of loose paper
  • Clear plastic bags will be provided at coat check for wallets, medication, and other small/personal items. Upon arrival in the reading room, you will be asked to show a current U.S. state driver’s license, state non-driver ID, IDNYC, or passport and to sign the library’s guidelines form.

All other personal belongings must be checked. These include:

  • Bags of any size 
  • Umbrellas
  • All outerwear, such as overcoats, raincoats, parkas, anoraks, windbreakers, and jackets
  • Binders, folders, notebooks, index cards, and books

​Layers of indoor clothing, such as sweaters and blazers, must be worn for the duration of your research visit, or left at the coat check.

No food, gum, drinks, or pens are allowed in the library reading room.

Reproductions and Photocopying

The library encourages researchers to use hand held cameras to capture images of library collections for later reference. All photography must be done in accordance with the library's photography guidelines. All photocopying is done by the library staff. The charge for letter and legal size copies is 50 cents. Ledger size copies are $1.00. There is a limit of twenty photocopies per person per day (not including prints from microfilm), and no photocopying is done after 4:00 pm. Copying from microfilm is self-serve, at the cost of 35 cents per page. Photocopies made by the library as well as photographs taken by researchers are intended for reference purposes only and may not be reproduced or sold in any form. Those desiring photographic reproductions of library materials or permission to reproduce such images should contact the Department of Rights & Reproductions directly.
